Vegetation Management

  • This project involves providing funding for 'fuel reduction' primarily along public road corridors by the Fire District as part of its broader vegetation management fuel reduction program. These road corridor ROWs have been selected by the Fire Department, in some cases requiring participation by the County TPW department.

    • The reduction and disruption of the horizontal and vertical continuity of vegetation, both live and dead, and beyond the required defensible space

    • Increase roadway safety (visibility)

    • Reduce wildfire ignitions

    • Reduce wildfire intensity near roads and structures to support slowing/stopping a fire and evacuations

    • Allows aircraft delivered retardant and water to reach the wildfire and adjacent unburned vegetation

  • This is a vegetation management project consisting of the following:

    • Cut and remove brush and small trees. Some small trees will be chosen to remain.

    • Limb up larger trees to have all limbs at least six feet off the ground.

    • Remove portions of trees and brush that extend over the edge of road surface to a height of 15 feet.

    • Keep rootballs in place to reduct erosion.

Map of Northern Sonoma County Fire Protection District. Proposed work is to be completed in areas covered by the Geyserville Municipal Advisory Council.

General Guidelines:

  • Remove all vegetation 0-6 feet tall, specifically shrubs, brush, and small trees, to prevent a wildfire from spreading between shrubs and brush (horizontally)and into the tree canopy (vertical). Some vegetation can remain if separated 6-10 feet from other vegetation

  • Remove small trees with less than a 6-inchtrunk diameter at4½feet above the ground. Small trees can remain if no overstory trees are present and the spacing between trees is at least 20 feet (end of limb to end of limb)

  • Limb up larger/remaining trees so lowest branches are greater than 6 feet above ground level. May need to cut branches at trunk up to 10-12 feet

Summer 2021- Summer 2022 Proposed Work

  • Treat additional right of ways

  • Patrol and maintain previous project areas
